The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), describes Telehealth as the use of technology to deliver healthcare services – at a distance (remotely). Telehealth Physical Therapy and Virtual Consultations are both practical and sensible for anyone who is not able to commute to our Union Square, New York City clinic. If you have a smartphone, a tablet or computer – you’re all set to receive the best virtual consultation and physical therapy treatment available. It’s important to know our most effective and valuable tool is education. Using our telehealth system, you’ll be empowered in understanding both the science and nature of pain, identify important behavior and lifestyle changes, and learn new painless movement patterns. Working together we’ll structure a plan of care based on your history and what’s discovered in the analysis of your movement using video.
Plus with telehealth Physical Therapy there is no time off from work, no drive to your appointment, or waiting to see a Physical Therapist. Furthermore, early intervention of Physical Therapy can eliminate the need for unnecessary medication, surgery or extensive imaging tests – including X-Rays, MRIs and CT scans. Delaying treatment could mean additional expenses and prolonged pain.

Virtual Physical Therapy Optimizes Time
By eliminating traffic and the commute, the parking search, sitting in a waiting room, and other sometimes painstaking aspects of making in-person visits to the clinic, virtual physical therapy is time efficient with minimal disruption to your life.
Virtual Physical Therapy is Not Limited to Only In-Appointment Communication
It’s common for patients to want to share feedback or have questions spring up at any moment during the week. With virtual physical therapy you communicate with your physical therapist via email outside of your sessions and will receive a response back to your questions within 24 business hours. You can review your exercises, deliver updates and feedback – at any moment, and receive a swift response. This also allows for the possibility of your physical therapist to safely progress your treatment plan accordingly. Many people experience a speedy recovery as they are able to communicate freely with their therapist and in turn their therapist is able to adjust and progress their plan of care accordingly.
Accessibility to Treatment for Busy Lives & Care Anywhere You Are
As long as you have an internet connection sufficient for video conferencing, you can receive virtual physical therapy treatment anywhere you are. People receive treatment at their home, place of work, the gym, while traveling at hotels, at their favorite outdoor space in their yard or even at a nearby park. Logistics inconvenience and conflict no longer become a reason you cancel or miss physical therapy sessions. Additionally, with virtual consultations, our Physical Therapists get the opportunity to observe you in your natural environment. This leads to better recommendations for behavior and movement modifications to increase adherence.
Better Continuity of Care
A disruption or gap in your treatment leads to reduced progress and ultimately higher costs. While receiving virtual physical therapy, staying motivated is arguably one of the most critical factors which influences the speed and extent of your recovery. Research has shown this particularly true for those enduring lengthy surgical rehabilitation such Labral or ACL repair. In addition to the logistical flexibility of virtual physical therapy, research has also shown your enthusiasm can carry over into enduring positive behavioral shifts that lead to improved overall health and wellness. In this way, the time efficiency, potential for accelerating your treatment, and flexible logistics all facilitate you in seeing the big picture of your recovery, staying motivated, and strengthening your ability to manage temporary setbacks. You’ll enjoy a better continuity of care and optimal outcomes.

4 Steps to Virtual Physical Therapy at Perfect Stride, New York City
Signing Up
Appointment Preparation
You will also receive an email checklist of things you need to do to prepare for your virtual consultation:
You’ll need a communication device — An audio- and video-enabled communication device such as a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera and speakers. Make sure your device is either plugged in or has a full enough charge for a virtual physical therapy session. You’ll need an internet connection that is fast enough to handle live video communication and that your modems and routers are all functioning.
- You’ll need comfortable clothing – Comfortable athletic clothing that does not restrict your movement when performing physical therapy exercises and stretches. Be mindful that your therapist will need to be able to clearly visualize your movement, so wearing clothing that fits well and is not baggy will be beneficial.
- As noted earlier you will need a clear space with good lighting – make sure you have an open space free of clutter so you can safely perform movements. Based on the pain point or ailment you might be asked to perform exercises with the assistance of a sturdy chair, countertop, wall, stairs or other objects that you may have available in your environment.
- Since live virtual physical therapy is a one-on-one process, beyond following instructions and guidance, you can ask your Physical Therapist questions as they arise and deliver real time feedback on your response to the treatment being provided. Your Physical Therapist will give you insightful responses to all questions as they come and adjust treatment in the moment based on your response.
- Generally speaking, very little equipment is needed, however, depending on the pain point or ailment, certain ‘props’ can substitute for exercise devices. For example water bottles or canned goods can be effective as light dumbbell weights. A backpack filled with books can substitute for heavier weights, a sturdy chair or weighted storage box can help to provide an elevated surface for a wide range of movements.
- Common household items we may use include: a chair, towel, a belt or strap, a desk or countertop, dumbbell, weight plate, resistance band, a lacrosse or tennis ball, thick-soft pillow for kneeling positions to protect the knees, and/or a doorway can be useful for a wide variety of movements. If you are missing any needed items, do not worry, we’ll creatively adjust for you!
Conducting the Session
You may be asked to do physical movements on camera so that your Physical Therapist can assess your gait, balance, posture, flexibility, movement, and range of motion. Camera suggestions: There are 3 important camera angles commonly needed to completely assess your movement requiring you to adjust the height of your device to 1 of 3 possible positions:
1. Floor View: resting your notebook, phone, or tablet on the floor (against a wall, stack of books, or other object).
2. Chair View: resting your notebook, phone, or tablet on the seat of a chair
3. Desk View: having your notebook, phone, or tablet supported on a desk or countertop (may need to place a coffee mug or book on table to prevent phone or tablet from falling).
From here your therapist proceeds and conducts your session, generally involving a combination of analysis and assessment(s), exercises, education, and more. This will primarily depend on the purpose of your consultation.

Physical therapy helps you return to your pre-injury level of physical ability or better. Though commonly applied to sports injuries and generally orthopedic (musculoskeletal) pain or dysfunction, Virtual physical therapy can be adapted for ergonomics, post-surgery rehab, consultation regarding your current rehabilitation at another provider, recovery from a general injury or illness and more. In this treatment we’ll recreate an environment that mimics the forces of the real-life scenarios and activities that you are trying to return to. This enables you to practice functional movements in a controlled and safe environment. You’ll be able to deliver real-time feedback and daily feedback via email on how well you’re feeling with certain tasks so your physical therapist can adjust exercises and your treatment plan on-the-fly based on your feedback. Many people experience a speedy recovery and are able to return to optimal performance.
